Creating an Internet Resume
Creating an internet resume is an important part of every online job search. It is still vital to have a traditional printed resume, of course, but in this modern world of online technology and transactions you must also create a resume that's suited to this electronic process.
Different types of resumes
Let's start with a quick look at the four main types of resumes commonly used by job seekers:
Print - This is a traditional type of resume. It is structured and formatted to be attractive and easy to read when printed on paper, typically including bullet points, decorative fonts, and font emphases such as bold, italic, and underlined.
Scannable - This is a type of resume that may be delivered on paper or electronically. It is structured and formatted to allow employers to easily scan the information into their resume database. Because scanners cannot easily capture the formatting commonly used in print resumes (as noted above), a scannable resume does not include such formatting.
Email - This is a type of resume that is delivered electronically via email. It is structured and formatted similar to a scannable resume, allowing employers to transfer the information directly into their resume database.
Uploadable - This is a type of resume designed to be uploaded directly to the employer's resume database by the job seeker. It is structured and formatted in plain text (also called text only) without fancy fonts, bullet points, or font emphases such as bold, italic, and underlined.
Which type of resume should you prepare?
The short answer is you should prepare all four types of resumes because you will use each of them for different purposes. Most experts suggest you prepare all four types at the same time so they are ready and available when needed. There is a wealth of information available about how to prepare a traditional print resume, so for the remainder of this article we will focus on the other three types used online.
Check the content of your resume
The content of an internet resume is just as important as with a traditional resume. Key components you should check carefully include:
Spelling - Never rely solely on the spell check program of your word processing program to check spelling because it will not catch some common errors. Read the resume carefully; use the professional proofreader's technique of reading the resume from the end to the beginning, one word at a time. Also ask at least one other person to read it, bringing a fresh pair of eyes to the process.
Grammar - This is a difficult area for many people. Most word processing programs include a grammar check function, so make use of it. It is also a good idea to have someone else who has good grammar knowledge read through it, too.
Clarity/Accuracy - Check your resume carefully to ensure it communicates information with clarity and accuracy. Watch out for 'filler' words and phrases such as 'in order to', 'that', 'for the purpose of', and the like.
Keywords - These are particularly important in an internet resume because employer databases are programmed specifically to pick up on important keywords for a particular job posting. If you want your resume to be considered when the human resources representative queries the database, it must include the appropriate keywords for the job in question.
